Velvet is in serious revival mode. Gone are the days of tacky puff sleeves and ill-fitting eighties silhouettes. The new velvet is chic, luxurious & making the biggest comeback for the upcoming autumn/winter season. Looking to rock the ultra in-style velvet trend but don’t know how? I know it can be tricky, especially because velvet can go bad so quickly. When done right, it can look glam & trendy, but it can also look like your grandma’s antique drapes just as easily. With all the celebs, bloggers, designers and street style stars embracing this fabric in everything from accessories to clothing to shoes, you know this is a trend thats here to stay for at least a couple of seasons. Fortunately for you, I’ve found some of the best velvet styles available online to help you get your toes wet, and with a few pointers on how to style them, you’ll easily be the best dressed out of your entire crew. Read on for everything you need to know (and click directly on any of the links to buy!).
First things first, velvet looks best in darker, jewel tones or in some cases certain shades of pastels & neutrals. Stay away from neon or primary colours in bright hues such as lime green, cherry red or lemon yellow, as they instantly look tacky. Second, velvet comes in shiny versions, and versions that are slightly more matte. Both can look nice depending on the detailing of the piece, but it should be a nice quality fabric that doesn’t pull apart or leave fibres everywhere like your dogs fur. Third, there are all kinds of thicknesses available in this fabric, from very heavy mostly used for winter wear, to thinner velvet which works for our hot, humid Indian climate. Consider the weather when purchasing thicker velvet because it’s known to be extremely warm. Fourth, you should always let velvet be the standout piece in your outfit while keeping everything else subdued and minimal. If you’re new to this trend you don’t really want to be mixing velvet with a whole mess of other colours, textures, prints etc as your outfit will look cluttered & confused. However in certain cases velvet looks great alongside silk, embroidery, denim, lace and even when it’s printed. If you feel up to experimenting with it then just mix and match till it feels right.
