Denim by nature is considered a casual fabric. We’re used to seeing it in it’s grungier, cooler avatar; rarely does anyone take it into formal territory. When I first saw this ruffle detail blouse from The Label Life, I knew I wanted to style it in an unconventional way, and I thought- why not denim but older, classier and for grown ups?
Gone are the age-old rules of specific work dress-codes and ill-fitted shirts and trousers. In 2017, you can really play around with what you wear to the office or work, as long as its appropriate and looks formal enough. I decided to pair this shirt with peg-leg trousers from The Label Life in a very similar shade of blue (although they are not denim) with gold buttons. The uniformity of colour throughout the outfit not only adds a serious style punch, it also looks chic, timeless & totally work or going out appropriate. I would even take this outfit out for a night of dinner and drinks, simply by switching the shoes to something strappy and adding a pair of earrings or a statement piece of jewellery.
Some things to keep in mind are the fit and the details; the trouser should give you shape since the shirt is boxy and detailing such as the vintage looking gold buttons on the trousers adds style elements that are necessary to a monotone outfit. I like to keep the hair off the face in a messy, textured low ponytail since the shirt has quite a high neck and a collar, this allows you to really show off the cut of the blouse. My shoes and bag are in classic black & gold, keeping the whole look uncluttered and elegant.
I would love to hear about how you style denim for dressier occasions or for the office, so write in to me on style@jasleengill.com for a chance to have your picture featured on the blog.
