The 90’s have been making a major comeback in the world of fashion, and everything from chokers to platform sandals to crop tops and slip dresses are all over every designer & high street brand there is. The style icons of the 90’s, such as the Spice Girls and Brittany Spears are the ladies you should be channeling. Don’t be afraid to don teeny tiny buns, plastic neck bands, sports inspired pieces for daily wear (hello Sporty Spice and athleisure), belly showing shirts and glitter on your eyes!
Aztec prints actually gained a cult following in the 80’s and continued to go strong through the 90’s before disappearing for a few years. Now that they’ve been back for the last 4-5 years, they’ve taken on many avatars, some super tacky and others supremely delightful. Personally, I’m a bit over aztec prints in loud, bright colours, but give me a nice monotone black & white print on a textured fabric and I’m a happy girl. Tapestry style fabrics & prints (thicker cloth woven with heavier thread) are very in right now, such as the material used in the skirt I’m wearing. Thicker fabrics tend to give a really nice fit when it comes to shorts and skirts, since they smooth out any bumps and cover up the dreaded underwear shape on the butt.
This high-waist skirt has an asymmetrical hem and a raw edge where the threads are exposed, giving it an interesting finish. I’ve wrapped an antique coin belt around the waist just to add some character, and paired the skirt with a boho lace crop top. I love mixing textures, it creates a unique look each and every time. The addition of the iconic 90’s choker (which we’ve all worn in 3rd grade) and the man bun in my hair gives the whole outfit a throwback vibe, taking it back to the days when Posh Spice was everyones style inspiration, while still keeping it young and fresh (and boho which is my style and I can’t help it).
To try this look for yourself, just take a short high waisted skirt, add a cute crop top that ends just above where the skirt begins (a small hint of skin is needed), throw on a choker (available online or you can DIY one using ribbon), and twist your hair into a half bun. If you’re really feeling it, add some glitter liner to your lids and a backpack with patches. Now go show off your perf 90’s style!
